Stadium construction kicks off

03 Sep, 17

The Department of State Development is leading the delivery of the North Queensland Stadium Project which is expected to support up to 750 jobs throughout the design and construction stages.

With a total project budget of $250 million, the centrally located 25,000 seat, best-practice, multi-purpose, regional stadium will be built in Townsville, in time for the start of the 2020 National Rugby League (NRL) season.

The project provides a catalyst for urban regeneration in Townville, attracting further investment into the region and supporting jobs growth.

Stadium vision

To develop a vibrant new stadium that attracts visitors and investment, celebrates Townsville's tropical climate, values the water edge environment, delivers high quality public spaces and supports urban regeneration.

Stadium objectives

It is anticipated the North Queensland Stadium will:

  • become a nationally-recognised sports stadium with world-class sustainable urban design and architecture, establishing a clear identity that is uniquely 'North Queensland'
  • stimulate broad investment and economic development in the long-term future of Townsville as a major regional city, underpinned by its sporting excellence, distinct tourism offerings and strong and diverse local economy
  • transform and activate places and spaces as an urban attraction that draw people to Townsville's city heart
  • promote active experiences, social interaction and a broad range of sporting and cultural activities

North Queensland Stadium is a joint project of the Queensland Government ($140M), Australian Government ($100M) and Townsville City Council (land and enabling infrastructure) and is supported by both the National Rugby League and the North Queensland Cowboys ($10M).

The stadium forms part of the Townsville City Deal signed in December 2016.
